In the remote you can see a sound effect, make sure it is turned to Natural Plus or Bass boost because these are the only 5.1 modes, if 3d movie or same here.. I guess I can safely assume the rear speakers do work though, I just didnt have a DVD or surround effect source to test today. so to get 5.1 channel surrounding sound you need to pull out 5.1 ch audio from tv and put that to a 5.1 ch speaker..
