What a pain! I agree that the root issue is cooling most likely - somehow unplugging the LED improves the situation enough to make a difference, at least for my drive. (Could the light My retailer (komplett.no) sent me a new drive without any fuss. I was unable to copy files greater than 1GB because I was getting "delayed write failures".

I verified the power supply, USB port and USB cable was okay using new FreeAgent drive, which worked just fine; so I just shipped the bad one back to Seagate and Cargando... OH well live and learn I guess.
