People really liked these so it looks like Microsoft decided to implement their own version called the RefinementWebPart (also known as the Refinement Panel). I had 9 items in the result set yet only one showed a value for contenttyperefinement. To do this go to Central Admin->Manage Service Applications->Search Service Application->Content Sources->Drop Down the Content Source and say Start Full Crawl. There’s been no great customisation to do in this instance, however with just a little configuration it’s been possible to achieve great results (pun intended). I did figure out a way to make it work though... Once you execute a query, I don't think there is a way to tell from the results what scope each result came from when multiple scopes are returned.
